14. Cypress Hill (B-Real & DJ Muggs)

The Vibe: Psychedelic West Coast Dust. While many West Coast acts were leaning into sunny G-Funk, Cypress Hill went in the opposite direction. DJ Muggs created a claustrophobic, stoned, and dusty soundscape using high-pitched squeals and heavy rock samples. B-Real’s nasally, sinister flow was the only thing that could slice through that thick fog.

  • Essential Track: “How I Could Just Kill a Man”
  • Blog Fact: DJ Muggs wasn’t just the group’s DJ; he was the leader of the “Soul Assassins” production collective, influencing the gritty sound of the East Coast as much as the West.
