Day 5: State Laws: The Talent Agencies Act
Headline: Is Your Agent Legal? Understanding the TAA
In California, the Talent Agencies Act (TAA) is the law of the land. It states that only licensed agents can seek work for artists. If a manager “books” a tour for you in California without a license, you may actually be legally allowed to void your contract with that manager and stop paying them commissions entirely.
These laws exist to prevent “predatory booking,” where people take advantage of young artists by promising fame in exchange for huge chunks of their paycheck.
The Bottom Line: Know the laws of the state where your agency is based. It is your primary shield against exploitation.
